Food Trends for 2018
Food experts have targeted some new trends for the year ahead.
But first, here are some popular favourites from 2017....
Tacos
Low and no-alcohol drinks
Sea vegetables
Pickles and ferments
Portuguese food
Boozy ice cream
Kombucha
Matcha powder
Instant Pot recipes
Wine infusions
Plant-based eating. This means not only the bowl of fruit or vegetables on the table, but also plant-based meat substitutes and other stand-ins for regular foods, like milk. Oat, pea and nut milks may become increasingly popular and easy to find on the shelves.
Mushrooms. Some like them, some don't. But the new trend will see mushrooms in stranger places, like your smoothies, teas and coffees.
Sparkling waters. Bubbly, flavorful seltzers are appearing everywhere. La Croix, Izzy and Schweppes are just a few of many brands out there.
Global Foods and cuisine. It's fun to walk into a global market and purchase unique snacks. Everyone else must think so, too because they are getting easier to find.
Besides snacks, global cuisine is always trendy, though the region changes year by year.2018 is supposedly the year to see more Middle Eastern and Filipino food, in particular.
Flower-infused drinks. Have you tried lavender kombucha? Pink floral teas and blossom spiked cocktails may be on this year's menu, too.
Sugar alternatives. The search goes on for that perfect, natural sweetener. People this year may be keeping manuka honey, date syrup and coconut sugar in their cupboards.
